Decide On A Theme

Deciding on a theme and colour scheme for your Christmas table setting is the first step. Do you like classic reds and greens, sophisticated silver or a luxury gold look? Some people love glitter and sparkles while others prefer something a little more understated.  Whether you have an oak dining table, glass dining table or painted dining table, deciding on a theme means you’ll have a rough guide to stick to when it comes to decorating for Christmas.

Choose A Centrepiece

Once you’ve got your theme sorted, it’s time to think about a fantastic centrepiece that will set the tone for your layout. If you have an oak dining table, anything will look great but natural centrepieces will complement the oak well; why not use pinecones, holly sprigs and pine (just cut a little bit from your Christmas tree). Glass dining tables and high gloss dining tables match well with metallic and shimmering decorations, so add a centrepiece with some sparkle and shine for a truly magical look. Whatever table you have, you can never go wrong with fresh flowers (try festive flowers like poinsettias – they are popular at Christmas for a reason!) or try some pretty candle holders. A top tip is to use LED candles in your centrepiece in place of real ones for a safer option – especially good if you’ve got kids at the table. You can even buy battery operated LED candles that flicker for a realistic effect.

Stick to a Budget

You certainly don’t need to spend a lot to create a stunning Christmas look for your dining table. There are plenty of affordable Christmas decorations available and you can even opt for the DIY approach. Forage for pinecones (a great activity to do with kids too) and pick your own mistletoe if you can find some, just don’t forget to wear gloves! Paper napkins and crackers can look very chic, especially if you go for understated designs and classic colours.

Consider Your Menu

When thinking about how you would like to decorate your table for Christmas, make sure you don’t disregard what you’ll actually be eating and how you’ll be serving it. Traditional turkey dinners can take up a lot of space on the table, so you may need to downsize your decorations or carve the turkey away from the table. Planning on a lot of side dishes? These take up room too, so be mindful of how much space you will have to work with when it comes to decorating. It’s worth mentioning that extending dining tables are very handy for hosting celebratory meals as they create more table space instantly, so you can have your turkey on the table and create a beautiful tablescape too. If you’re really low on table space, why not hang some decorations above the table instead? Hanging decorations can look amazing, so they’re great to have as well as or instead of table decorations.
